Sorrento part 2. Pompeii, our civilisation was based upon many from the days of Pompeii. When Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79AD it covered the city in 12m of ash at 350degC, destroying all life. The consequent earthquakes destroyed the city under the ash. Pompeii is approximately 2000 years old.
